How To Clean Car Floor Mats

Cleaning Car Mats

With all the dirt and debris that your floor mats protect your vehicle from on a daily basis in Sandwich, it’s only natural that they’ll have to be cleaned eventually! This might sound like a daunting process, especially if your floor mats have built up a lot of residue, but it’s more straightforward than you might think. Cleaning your floor mats is just a regular part of Jeep service, and you can easily do it all yourself! Our Falmouth Service Center has got everything you need to know about how to clean floor mats below, for both rubber and carpet floor mats.

Supplies You’ll Need

Proper supplies are essential to making sure you get your floor mats back in top condition. Make sure you have the following before getting started:

  • Rubber Floor Mats: Vacuum, rubber floor mat cleanser, stiff bristle brush, hose or bucket of water, microfiber towel or a place to hang your mats
  • Carpet Floor Mats: Vacuum, carpet floor mat cleaner, brush, hose or bucket of water, wet vac if available, a place to hang your mats

How to Clean Car Floor Mats: Rubber

Rubber floor mats are the preferred choice for off-road vehicles, because they’re great at protecting your car from more heavy-duty residue like mud, rain, and snow. You’ll want to clean rubber mats regularly to ensure they continue to keep your interior in good condition. Just follow these steps and you’ll be all set:

  1. Remove the floor mats from your vehicle, so you don’t accidentally damage the interior with water or cleaning fluid.
  2. Shake out the mats and use the vacuum to make sure you’ve gotten rid of all the top-level debris.
  3. Rinse the mats with clean water.
  4. Apply a rubber floor mat cleanser and gently scrub with a stiff bristle brush to remove deeper grime and debris.
  5. Rinse the mats.
  6. Hang up to dry or dry with a microfiber towel. Make sure the mats are completely dry before putting them back in your vehicle.

How to Clean Car Floor Mats: Carpeted

Luxury vehicles usually come with carpeted floor mats instead of rubber. These are also typically the mats that are provided by the factory when you first bring your car home. The process for cleaning out carpeted floor mats is different than if you have rubber mats, so you’ll want to follow these steps instead:

  1. Remove the floor mats from your vehicle to avoid damaging the interior.
  2. Vacuum the floor mats to remove surface-level dirt.
  3. Shake the floor mats or whack them against a hard surface to rid them of dust and dirt.
  4. Apply a carpet cleanser to your mats. Be sure to follow the directions on your particular cleaner, as different products can have different processes.
  5. Scrub the mats to remove any stains and deeper-level residue and debris.
  6. Rinse thoroughly.
  7. If you have a wet vac, apply it to your mats and vacuum them a second time. This will cut down on dry time as well as removing any excess debris that the cleanser didn’t catch.
  8. Hang your mats to dry. Make sure they are completely dry before placing them back in your vehicle.
