2021 Jeep Wrangler in Snow

Winter is soon approaching, and you’ll need a winter safety kit for your car to combat slick roads and hazardous weather. Fortunately, we at O'Hara Motors have compiled a guide for a winter safety kit that will help you sufficiently prepare for driving on Sandwich or Mashpee roads. Learn more by reading about our winter car survival kit below for more tips and tricks on surviving the icy winters.

Winter Car Safety Kit

When driving down slick or icy roads in Bourne, you’ll want to be prepared for any situation that may head your way. You’ll also want to be equipped with the proper tools just in case you find yourself stranded in an unknown part of town. Here are the materials needed in your winter safety kit that our O'Hara Motors service center recommends to stay safe in cold weather:

  • Battery cables
  • Ice scraper
  • Portable shovel
  • Basic first-aid kit
  • Cell phone charger
  • Camera
  • Spare tire kit
  • Items to help when stranded: flashlight, warning signaling cones, safety vest, roadside triangles, duct tape, jumper cables, light stick, snow shovel, backup batteries
  • Common winter items: gloves, blanket, rain poncho, rags, boots, socks, sleeping bag, a hat. Pack anything to keep you warm if you get stranded during a snowstorm.

Essential Items for Long Road Trips This Winter

If you are planning on winter driving for vacation or for any other purpose, it may be a good idea to prepare these items just in case:

  • Tow strap: A tow strap helps if you find yourself stuck in a ditch and need a different drive to help pull you out. Make sure to consult your owner’s manual before use.
  • Fire extinguisher: You never know when a small fire may occur so it would be a good idea to have a fire extinguisher on hand. Make sure the extinguisher is for automotive use.
  • Long-lasting food and water: To keep yourself nourished and hydrated on long trips, make sure to have granola, protein bars, and water for at least six months before they need to be replaced.

If you end up stranded due to bad weather, you want to make sure to stay inside of or close to your vehicle as much as possible. Never leave your vehicle and go off on your own. Emergency responders may have a harder time finding you if you wander off on your own, so make sure to prepare yourself with a winter roadside emergency kit.
